Summer Reading Assignment 2021
Welcome to English 10 Honors! We are so excited to have you in our class next year. Hopefully you’ve prepared yourself for a rigorous year, and you are willing to put forth the work needed. For your summer reading, you will be choosing one of the following novels: Jane Eyre, The Scarlet Letter, or Macbeth. The novel and accompanying assignments should be completed by September 17th.
Your summer assignment will include the following:
There are PDF and audiobook copies of all of the books in the module for each book. If you would like to check out a physical copy of either Jane Eyre or The Scarlet Letter, Westlake High School has a limited number of copies available. If you would like to check one out, please send one of us an email to set up an appointment before June 1st.
If you have any questions or concerns, you may email your teacher. Please remember, we are also on summer break, and we will not be checking our emails regularly.

Assignment 1:
Theme Development over an Entire Text(Estimated Completion Time: 45+ minutes)
Assignment Description:This first assignment is to demonstrate your abilities to read and comprehend a complex piece of literature. You will specifically be demonstrating your ability to do the following:
Assignment Instructions:After reading one of the books on the summer reading list, answer the prompt below.
Prompt: In a minimum of 500 words, determine a main theme of the text and trace its development throughout the text.
Assignment Description:
This second assignment is to demonstrate your ability to complete a close reading of a short literary passage. All three passages have been pulled from your summer reading. For this assignment, you will only be evaluating the passage from the book you read. Remember, this is an Honors course and your work should be of the best quality; please do your best to write in complete, detailed sentences free from grammatical and spelling errors. However, we do understand that you are just coming into this course. Just do the best that you can with the knowledge you have.
Assignment Instructions:
Choose one of the short passages below to read and then complete parts one and two for this assignment.
Part One: Annotate the passage looking for author’s moves including but not limited to conflict, irony, characterization, symbolism, simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification, foreshadowing, setting, flashbacks, connotation, tone, mood, point of view, etc.
*Tech Tip: You can edit the PDF directly by opening it in Google Docs and using the highlight and comment tools.
Part Two: Based on the annotations of your passage, choose two author’s moves and analyze how they contribute to the development of the author’s purpose (in a minimum of one paragraph per author's move).

- Completing a close reading of the passage from the novel.
- Writing a 350 word literary analysis on the passage.
